Nascar: A Race Fan’s Dilemma

If you are a race fan, this is the worst time of the year. I know, the drivers and teams have been on the road for 10 months, and will need some time to re-familiarize themselves with their families. Everyone should get time for the holidays, but I still hate this time of year. Almost three months lay ahead with no cars on the tracks, no tire smoke, and no Green flags on Sunday afternoon.

I was browsing the Nascar Media site this morning trying to find something to write about, and all the storylines are full of ideas about what has happened during the 2012 season, banquets, but not really anything about racing. Hey..it’s been a week already.

I spotted the one thing that sparked some interest. Put January 10th 2013 in your calendar. By January 10th, you will be ready for some on-track racing news, and will have had your fill of the Silly Season, Banquets and whatever it is they do during this part of the season. January 10th is when the haulers will begin rolling into Daytona International Speedway for the Winter testing session, which is know as Preseason Thunder. That’s when you take a ride to Daytona,  get the smell of that stock Sunoco fuel (wink sink) in your nose. That’s the signal that Speedweeks is just around the corner.

The testing lasts for three days, and will feature the new cars. At last we can say good-bye to the COT Car that has beleagured race fans since it was mandated full time starting with the 2008 season. I don’t know about you, but I will be glad to see it go. In my opinion, it was the chief source of the Sunday Afternoon snoozers we’ve seen of late.

The Rolex 24 will be the actual end of the off-season. Many of the Nascar stars are entered in this race, and it tends to get the juices flowing. It brings race teams, and spring activity to the home of the Great American Race. The Budweiser Shootout, and the start of a new season. Good thing there is Football and Christmas to keep up occupied.
