The NASCAR Sprint Media Tour continued again today and one of the “stops” was a meeting with Rick Hendrick and his Hendrick Motorsports team. At the conference was all four of his drivers, including the new and improved Kasey Kahne.
The biggest discussion wasn’t about the team or the season, rather it was about the new look Kasey Kahne is sporting. Kahne showed up with a unique haircut that he said was inspired by Steve Nash. Mr. Hendrick offered the driver $20 to go get the rest of his hair cut [jokingly].
The driver is heading into his second season with Hendrick Motorsports and says he feels much more comfortable with the organization. He says while many see him as an underdog for the Sprint Cup Championship this year, he feels this is his best chance yet to win the title.
It can’t be a press conference without the mention of Dale Earnhardt Jr. Mr. Hendrick spoke about how Earnhardt actually has thirteen races without a sponsor for 2013.
PepsiCo is reducing their role in NASCAR for financial reasons. This has left the team searching for a sponsor for NASCAR’s most popular driver. However it’s not that they can’t find a sponsor…it an issue of working with current sponsors to give potential sponsors the races they want. Some sponsors are willing to pay to be on Earnhardt’s #88 Chevrolet SS on all 36 races, however Mr. Hendrick would rather not cut that budget short or rip off current sponsors and would rather put his HendrickCars.com on the car to solve that issue.
Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon are really ready for the new season and new car. Gordon says, “I’m a big fan, I love it. I like the body style & I think the teams and crew chiefs feel the same thing.”
Hendrick Motorsports developmental driver Chase Elliott will be moving up in NASCAR ranks from the K/N series to a part-time schedule in the Camping World Truck Series and ARCA Racing Series. The trucks will come from Turner Scott Motorsports who receives engine and technical support from Hendrick Motorsports.
