Bruton Smith: Ban Start and Parking

Bruton Smith has been known through out his tenure in the motorsports industry for saying some pretty outlandish things. He had a few crazy ideas again this week, but also had a solid idea that because of certain policies, may be impossible to solve.

Bruton Smith spoke about how NASCAR needs to ban starting a parking, a strategy used by smaller teams to save money and earn money by racing a few laps and then calling it a day.

“Start-and-park should not be a part of what we do,” he said. “I think it’s derogatory toward our sport. I’m going to try my best and I hope you’ll join me to see if NASCAR can do something about this. It certainly isn’t adding anything to our sport, and it certainly takes away.”

The problem with Smith’s statement is the issue of enforcement. How can NASCAR truly enforce a rule that bans and/or restricts start-and-parks.

NASCAR can’t tell a team they can’t race because they only plan to run a few laps.

And if they enforce a rule such as one that may require a team run a certain amount of laps before retiring, how can NASCAR truly ensure that rule if a driver is involved in a wreck? There are too many variables and unanswerable questions for this issue. Seems NASCAR is just going to have to deal with start-and-park teams.

Could NASCAR take these cars back to the R&D center and fine a team if no true issue is found wrong with the car? Possibly, but as much as I actually agree with Smith for a change, I just don’t see how this could be possible.
