The long time veteran Jeff Burton is looking at a tough and important year in 2013. He hasn’t won a race in four years and if he does not win at least one race this year it is almost a guarantee that he will be out of a ride. If he does loose his ride there is a good chance it will be given to Richard Childress’s son Austin Dillion.
Jeff Burton has definitely had an above average career with 21 wins but, he has not had a win since the 2008 Bank of America 500 at Charlotte. With his contract with RCR and his sponsor Caterpillar ending at the end of this season, Burton must perform this year if he wants to stay with the team. He is part of a issue where none of the drivers at RCR have done great in the past few years. Kevin Harvick has won a few races but it is nothing to brag about. With Austin Dillion probably moving up to the Sprint Cup Series next year that means one of the three current drivers will be out of a ride there. Although it looks like Kevin Harvick will not be with the team Jeff Burton still needs to perform because the past four years can only be described as “dreadful”.
In an interview with sporting news Burton said
Jeff Burton knows how to win and knows this year is a critical one if he wants to continue to race competitively. Burton’s best chances to win are obviously on the restrictor plate tracks and also the mile and a half tracks like Texas, Charlotte and Atlanta. Burton is a skilled racer though so don’t be surprised if you see him win on a short track or a road course as well.
With his contract with the team and his sponsor ending this year, Jeff Burton needs to step up his game and pull out a few wins. He has the experience and knows how to get it done and if he and is team can figure out this Generation six car before anyone else Jeff Burton has a great shot to win some races.
