For the second season in a row, Danica Patrick will will start the season opening race from the pole position. Of course last year was in the Nationwide Series and this year will be in the Sprint Cup Series Daytona 500.
Danica Patrick is the first female pole sitter in the Sprint Cup Series and the Daytona 500 in NASCAR history. She ran a 45.817 second lap at 196.434 miles per hour.
“I’ve only done Cup qualifying here once before … this has been very straightforward, very predictable and consistent,” Patrick said. “I hope it’s enough.”
Since unloading her Daytona 500 car off of the trailer for practice this week she has been fast. She was second fastest in yesterday’s first practice session and fastest in the second session.
Her car owner Tony Stewart had been the fastest in that session, and when asked if he thought it would hold up, responded that Patrick was just getting on track and he expected to be knocked off real quickly.
Last year she sat on the pole for the Nationwide Series season opener at Daytona so speed is something Patrick has a feel for in Daytona.
