IndyCar’s Graham Rahal Wants to Race NASCAR at Mid-Ohio

2013 is shaping up to be the biggest year yet in the young career of Graham Rahal. With many changes and new career paths for Rahal, he is now leaving the door open for yet another one.

It will be his first season driving for his father’s team, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, in the IZOD IndyCar series. Now he wants to pursue an opportunity in NASCAR.

He is looking to find a ride to add the inaugural Nationwide Series race at Mid-Ohio to his racing calendar. He also doesn’t close the door on running more races in NASCAR if he had the chance to.

“I want to do it really bad,” he said. “I’d like to do more, actually, just because I think it would be fun. But Mid-Ohio is the one I’m really trying to make happen and trying to find an opportunity.”

Mid-Ohio is just an hour away from Rahal’s hometown of Columbus.

Rahal has prioritized finding a ride for the Mid-Ohio race, but also said he would love to race at an oval track in NASCAR as well.

With the smaller IndyCar schedule, it is certainly possible if he can find a ride, to see Rahal racing part-time in NASCAR.

I wrote a column about this last month. There’s a gap in the Indycar schedule where Watkins Glen and Mid-Ohio take place on back-to-back weekends. It seems to me like a number of Indycar drivers could do rather well for themselves in the proper setup, and promote the sport a bit in the process.
