Elliott Sadler joined the Joe Gibbs Racing organization after two seasons with Richard Childress Racing. When he made the switch to Gibbs, he made it very clear he has a goal of returning to the Sprint Cup Series.
Sadler will now get that chance, but for only one scheduled race. He will drive the No. 81 Alert Energy Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing for one unannounced race.
Alert Energy is a product made by Wrigley which has been a long-term partner with Joe Gibbs Racing.
Sadler however, while getting a one race deal with Alert Energy, may find himself in more than just one race this year.
Denny Hamlin was injured in a last lap crash at Auto Club Speedway on Sunday that caused him to have a compression fracture. At this time it is unknown if Hamlin will require surgery or even time out of the car to allow the injuries to heal.
Hamlin was released from the hospital Monday night and said that he has to lie down flat just to breath. Any other position causes him to lose his breath. He will meet with Dr. Jerry Petty to evaluate his injuries any further.
If Hamlin requires time out of the car, expect Sadler to get the nod from Coach Gibbs to drive the No. 11 Toyota.
