NASCAR: Dale Earnhardt Jr is Your New Points Leader

Buried underneath the drama that followed the Auto Club 400 in Fontana on Sunday is Dale Earnhardt Jr. For the first time this season and second consecutive season, Earnhardt finds himself on top of the Sprint Cup Series point standings.

For the first time in his career he finds himself as the leader in the point standings for two consecutive seasons. That all can be credited to the work of his team led by crew chief Steve Letarte.

He restarted nineteenth on the final restart of the race and managed to find himself in fourth before taking second place after Denny Hamlin and Joey Logano crashed.

“Yeah, we had a little problem on pit road on one of our stops and lost a lot of positions,” said Earnhardt in his post-race interview. “But we’ve always, we just stick together and everybody was just kind of, patted each other on the back and we were going to get another chance to redeem ourselves on pit road.”

He also credited the team for helping him close races out, something he says he never was able to do. Now, he can do it just like any other team. He says he will ride the wave and continue to race hard and feels that victories are on the way.

One victory could come next weekend at Martinsville Speedway where Earnhardt has a solid track record for running well there.
