The big news out of Thursday’s test day at Texas Motor Speedway is that Chip Ganassi could be selling his Sprint Cup team to a Menard. That is John Menard, a long time racer and supporter in the Sprint Cup.
It is no secret that Earnhardt Ganssi Racing has struggled in recent years. Neither Jamie McMurray or JPM have battled for wins since 2010 when McMurray won the Daytona 500 and at Indianapolis. The last time an EGR team made the Chase was in 2009 with JPM.
Despite the improvement in performance this season, EGR could see new ownership in the future. John Menard looks to be the leading candidate to take over ownership of EGR. Menard has been a racer all his life and currently sponsors his son, Paul Menard, who races for Richard Childress Racing.
RCR supplied engines for ECR until this season. Now EGR gets engines from Hendrick Motorsports. Ganassi, having a old relationship with RCR and both teams being Chevrolet teams, it makes sense why he has interest in Menard.
The two sides will share more as the Sprint Cup season progresses but it is to early to tell how serious Chip Ganassi is about selling his Sprint Cup team.
