Now It's On To Rockingham

For years during the 1990’s, I can remember Dale Earnhardt Sr. in his Daytona 500 post-race interviews. The last thing he would always say was “and now it’s on to Rockingham”. Didn’t the North Carolina Education Lottery 200 on Sunday afternoon leave you wanting more? It did me. It left me again, wanting to see more races at The Rock.

As an avid race fan, I would love to see NASCAR return at least one Nationwide, and Sprint Cup race to this old track. I know that it’s capacity is just 60,000 seats, but if the race were run later in the spring, instead of the third week in February, folks would support this venue.

At just over a mile in length, with 22, and 25 degree banking in the corners, this little track with it’s sandy asphalt surface provides a challenge for drivers, and crew chiefs alike. I loved this race every year, but feel like NASCAR doomed the track because of the early scheduling. The same problem is happening to the spring Bristol race. They need to wait until winter is over before they bring a race to this part of the country.

NASCAR currently has two dates for Phoenix, Texas, Kansas, Pocono, and Michigan. If they were to cut Texas to one race, they could squeeze The Rock back in the schedule.

Unfortunately, professional sports do not consult with the fans on venues, and dates, but if fans would run a campaign to bring a race back to the little track that could, who knows? Can’t hurt to try.
