Matt Kenseth Prevails Against Kasey Kahne at Kansas

Another pole sitter, another race winner….Matt Kenseth won his second race of 2013 today after a thrilling battle with Kasey Kahne late in the event. It is the 3rd race in a row that the pole sitter won which hasn’t happened since 1985. The race was eerily similar to Las Vegas earlier this year when Kahne like today, harassed Matt Kenseth for the win in the closing laps.  He came across the line a single car length behind the former champ finishing 2nd yet again. It was the 26th win of Matt’s career and his second in a row at Kansas Speedway. Kahne has been fast all year and now finds himself 2nd in points to Jimmie Johnson who finished 3rd.

They weren’t wrecking every 5 laps like the truck race, but the STP 400 did have its moments. Kyle Busch brought out the first caution after spinning out all alone running 3rd just 5 laps into the race. He also brought out the first caution in the CWTS race yesterday. This track is Kyle’s worst and his day ended violently after spinning in front of Joey Logano resulting in a savage head-on collision. Including both races from this weekend, Busch crashed a total of 5 times destroying three different racecars. After the wreck, Denny Hamlin who hopes to return at Richmond posted this very interesting tweet…

“I know Joey felt bad but he doesn’t have to keep falling in the points on my count :) #seeyasoon” -Denny Hamlin Twitter

Ricky Stenhouse Jr. pitted while leading late in the race but a caution for the rear bumper of Brad Keselowski laying on the track shattered all hopes the rookie had of winning. It came down to another Kenseth/Kahne showdown and lap traffic kept holding up Matt. Kahne got a nose under him with 2 to go but couldn’t hold it. In the final corner, he drove it in hard and it surprisingly stuck giving him a run out of turn 4. He got to the back bumper of Matt but no further in a very entertaining end to the 400 miler. Jimmie Johnson holds a massive 37pt lead over teammate, Kasey Kahne with Brad getting pushed back to 3rd, 38pts behind. Here is the unofficial top 10 from the STP 400:

1.) Matt Kenseth #20 (TOYOTA)

2.) Kasey Kahne #5 (CHEVY)

3.) Jimmie Johnson #48 (CHEVY)

4.) Martin Truex Jr. #56 (TOYOTA)
