Takumo Sato Cruises To First Indycar Win at Long Beach

Takumo Sato took the victory today at Long Beach over 5 seconds ahead of Graham Rahal. It’s the first win of the Japanese born racer’s career that has entered its 4th year. AJ Foyt’s team hasn’t visited Victory Lane since 2002 so this is quite a historic day for them but unfortunately, AJ himself was not present at the race.

The race started off with pole sitter Dario Franchitti leading the way and the caution flew early after Sebastian Saaverda plowed into the wall ripping the left front wheel from the car. Just before that, Scott Dixon was turned into the fence by Tristin Vautier forcing officials to hand out a penalty to the rookie. The second caution came out after an incident between Charlie Kimabll and Alex Tagliani. Charlie over drove the corner on cold tires sending his car straight into the tires bringing Tagliani with him. On the restart, Takumo Sato pushed his way by Dario while chaos unfolded behind them. James Hinchcliffe got pinched into the inside wall by Kanaan when he attempted a risky 3-wide pass. EJ Viso spun during the crash but continued; the same could not be said for the very likeable mayor of Hinchtown.

Later on, reigning Indycar champion and defending Long Beach winner Ryan Hunter-Reay made an over zealous move under Ana Beatriz sending his Chevrolet into the tires ending his day. With 2 laps to go, Tony Kanaan crashed while running 5th ending the race under yellow flag conditions. Helio Castroneves finished 9th and continues to lead the standings but we have a new man in second and his name is Takumo Sato. Dixon was pushed back to 3rd but is still just 11pts behind. Here is the unofficial top 10 from the Toyota Grand Prix at Long Beach:

1.) Takumo Sato

2.) Graham Rahal

3.) Justin Wilson

4.) Dario Franchitti

5.) JR Hildebrand

6.) Marco Andretti

7.) Simon Pagenaud

8.) Simona De Silvestro

9.) Helio Castroneves

10.) Scott Dixon
