Denny Hamlin has been cleared to race at Talladega but he will only start the race. During the first caution during the race, they will take him out and put Brian Vickers in. That way, Denny will score points for the race and be credited with the place Vickers brings the car home in. Talladega is notorious for it’s savage high speed wrecks and they don’t want to put Hamlin in a dangerous situation by letting him run the entire event.
Denny is currently 29th in the standings 71pts behind 20th. The No.11 car is sitting 16th in owners points posting results of 10th, 8th, 31st and 35th with substitute drivers Mark Martin and Brian Vickers. My only concern for Denny starting Dega is that the first caution at that place usually takes out a lot of cars and if he were to be involved in it, things could get very ugly very fast. There was a 10 car pileup in the Daytona 500 this year on lap 34 taking out race favorites Tony Stewart and Kevin Harvick. I assume that the team will tell him to ride in the back of the pack away from any potential danger and just wait for his opportunity to hand the wheel to Vickers.
I can imagine that that they will lose a lap in the process because even though it’s a very large track, Denny will take a lot of time getting out of that car. This most likely means that he will be ready to race the full event at Darlington but that track is no cake walk either. Hopefully, the lady in black doesn’t do a number on Denny and his back. As for his rivalry with Logano, I don’t think it’s over but I don’t think Denny is an idiot either. He won’t go out there and start something right now just for the hell of it but I predict that these two will have another run in before 2013 is over. Earlier today, Hamlin tweeted “I can not wait to get back in car.. The smell of fuel and tires Ahhh” Good luck man and we are all glad to see you return!
