May 18, 2013; Fernando Alonso dominates the Spanish Grand Prix.

Amazing Alonso: The Spaniard Takes His Second Win For The Season

Whilst a devoted home crowd cheered him on, Fernando Alonso won the Spanish Grand Prix, bringing home his Ferrari in front of Lotus driver, Kimi Raikkonen and team mate, Felipe Massa.

Since 1996 the race has been won from a front row grid position, but today Alonso broke that tradition by dominating the race from its early stages all the way to the chequered flag.

Alonso started from fifth but made up positions instantly as soon as the lights went out. Before the end of the second corner on the opening lap, he had passed both Raikkonen and Hamilton and soon began catching front runners Rosberg and Vettel.

Rosberg had led from pole position into the first round of pit stops, but from there on out the Mercedes lacked the raw pace of its rivals. He was soon taken over by Alonso and Vettel, before slipping back amongst the field. Rosberg’s team mate, Lewis Hamilton, also became vulnerable due to his own car having break issues and the car’s absence of the speed it showed in qualifying.

In the closing laps of the race, Alonso had a clear lead in front of Raikkonen’s second placed Lotus whilst Massa turned his engine down and settled with third. The two Red Bulls rounded out the top five; an average day for the current world champions.
