Editor’s Note: This article was written prior to this weekend’s Daytona races, however a busy editor with a busy situation at home did not have time to publish this in time! Thanks for understanding!
This weekend at Daytona, Phoenix Racing will be running special paint schemes for both their Nationwide car and their Sprint Cup car. The Nationwide car will be driven by Kurt Busch and the Sprint Cup car will be driven by AJ Allmendinger.
Kurt Busch will be driving Cole Trickles car from ‘Days Of Thunder”. The only two differences will be Kurt’s name on the car and instead of the car being number 46 like the movie, it will be number one which is Phoenix Racing’s number. It even has the same “City Chevrolet” sponsor on the car. Kurt won the summer Daytona race last year while driving for Phoenix Racing. Kurt’s paint scheme is definitely going to be a fan favorite and Kurt also has a great shot of winning on Friday night.
AJ Allmendinger is driving for Phoenix this week and is also going to be driving a special paint scheme. The only difference is this one is going to have meaning to Phoenix Racing. The car is a un-sponsored 51 car with the exact same paint scheme that Neil Bonnett was driving when he was killed during practice for the 1994 Daytona 500. The sponsor for Bonnett was “Country Time Lemonade” but, they will not be sponsoring Allmendinger this weekend.
Either way, it is very cool to see a un-sponsored team come up with some cool ideas for a paint scheme rather than just running a plain black or white car with a number on it. When either car gets to the lead you know that the fans will be cheering and if they can win, especially Allmendinger it will be a great and memorable win for the people of Phoenix Racing.
