Austin Dillon Wins Pole for the Daytona 500

Conspiracy theorists are going to be busy after today.

Rookie Austin Dillon will lead the field to green for next Sunday’s Daytona 500.

He will be driving the No.3.

It has been 13 years since the No.3 has been on the track in the Cup series. 13 years since the tragic death of Dale Earnhardt in the Great American Race.

Dillon and his No.3 Dow Chevrolet was fast right off the truck in pre-season testing and also, for the start of Speedweeks. The Rookie driver and his Richard Childress Racing team were favorites leading into pole day and Dillon ran the perfect lap, not scrubbing off any speed, showing the hard work that the RCR camp put in during the off season.

Dillon’s lap of 45.914 saw him break into speeds just over 196mph. Just shy of Danica Patrick’s pole winning lap in 2013.

For much of qualifying, Hendrick Motorsports driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., sat on the provisional pole after being the first car to qualify. Earnhardt would end up seventh in the field heading into the duels on Thursday night.
