In 2013 Florida State University won the BCS National Championship Game. In 2014 FSU will not only be looking to stay atop of the College Football universe, but they will also be looking to make their way to Victory Lane in NASCAR. It was announced earlier today that FSU will be teaming up with Michael Waltrip Racing and Aaron’s to run a special paint scheme on the No. 55 car of Brian Vickers during the July Daytona race.
This isn’t going to be the first time a collegiate paint scheme has been seen in NASCAR. In fact, this won’t even be the first time that it has happened in 2014. This past weekend in Texas, Jeff Gordon ran a special Texas A&M scheme on his No. 24 Chevrolet. If not for a last-lap-pass by Joey Logano, Gordon would have put that paint scheme in Victory Lane.
When Vickers races the FSU colors in July he is hoping that he can best Gordon and Texas A&M by one spot and win the race in Daytona.
Everyone in America knows about Florida State’s tradition of success especially in athletics. Aaron’s and I really want to continue that tradition at Daytona in July and give Seminole fans a chance to see their car and colors celebrate in victory lane. I’m excited to be representing my home state on the car for Daytona. We’re hoping it will give us a ‘home field’ advantage we need.
NASCAR is really looking to hype up the partnership with FSU. According to a recent article on wctv.tv, NASCAR and FSU plan to unveil the car during an FSU spring game on April 12th.
For Vickers this isn’t his first time working with a collegiate paint scheme. Last season he drove a special Louisville Basketball scheme in honor of them winning the 2013 NCAA Tournament. Racing an FSU scheme in Daytona will simply be a continued tradition for MWR and Aaron’s. In the past the two have ran schemes celebrating the National Championships of both Auburn and Alabama with different MWR cars.
Vickers is coming off of a very impressive top-five finish in Texas. It will be interesting to see if he and the No. 55 team can carry that momentum into Darlington. Vickers currently sits ninth in the point standings.
