Is Kevin Harvick the Early Championship Favorite?

Just eight races into his career with Stewart-Haas Racing, Kevin Harvick already has two wins and is off to one of the strongest starts of his career. Is he the early favorite this season for the 2014 Championship?

With the new Chase format, Harvick is all but guaranteed a place in the 16-spot Chase and if he continues on the path that he has been on, he could easily be in the final four leading into Homestead.

Harvick spent his entire Sprint Cup career with Richard Childress in the No.29, taking over the ride after the tragic death of Dale Earnhardt in 2001. Collecting 23 total victories in 13 years, he contended for Championships but never finished better than third in the standings. Although he is currently sitting 22nd in the standings heading into Richmond, Harvick has consistently been one of the strongest cars in the field.

The biggest problem facing Harvick and the No.4 Chevrolet is mechanical and engine issues. With Hendrick motors under the hood and some of the best equipment in the series, Harvick has run into a handful of issues that have sent him to the garage. Many of his great runs have ended prematurely leaving him with finishes far from where he and he team deserved.

With a lot of racing left this season, there are still many more chances for race wins for the No.4 team. As the summer months get closer, it will be fun to watch how this team continues to grow and strengthen their bond. Harvick and Crew Chief Rodney Childers have something special in the works at it might just lead them both to their first Sprint Cup Series Championship.
