The story that is Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards is starting to become a never-ending saga. In Beyond The Flag’s last update on the two current Roush Fenway drivers, it appeared as though Edwards was on his way to Joe Gibbs Racing and Biffle to Michael Waltrip Racing. Edwards to JGR has been churning in the rumor mill for a couple of weeks now. As far as Biffle to MWR, that story got started when Darrell Waltrip all but told the world during pre-race coverage that Biffle was heading there.
In a recent article on FOX Sports.com, NASCAR Analyst Larry McRenyolds delves into the Biffle and Edwards’ saga and offer his insight as to what he is hearing about where each driver is going to end up in 2015. Surprisingly, or maybe not so surprisingly, he doesn’t expect either driver to go where most fans think that they will.
I know last week there was a lot of talk and speculation that both Greg Biffle and Carl Edwards would be driving for new teams in 2015, but now I just don’t think that’s going to be the case for both of them. I actually think Greg will be staying now at Roush Fenway Racing. I kept hearing that there was a possible deal for him to join Michael Waltrip Racing next year but it just couldn’t come together.
With that said, I do believe Carl Edwards will definitely be leaving Roush Fenway at the end of the season. I know there is a lot of speculation about him going to Joe Gibbs Racing which tried to put a deal together for him in 2013. That would obviously be a fourth team for Gibbs, should it happen.
However, the closer I keep my ear to the ground, the more I hear that Carl will be going to Team Penske and they will field a third team in 2015. That scenario seems to make more sense to me with Ford trying to keep Carl in the Blue Oval camp.
Given the comments and body language of Darrell Waltrip it did indeed seem like he was strongly hinting at Biffle going to MWR. However it’s very possible that the two talked and simply couldn’t reach a deal. As a free agent I am sure that Biffle is going to want to be paid well and it’s possible that MWR simply couldn’t afford him.
Edwards to Penske is some interesting news though. Almost everything in the air around Edwards thus far has pointed in the direction of JGR. As the season progresses I’m sure that this tale will take a few more twists and turns before we ultimately find out where each driver will run in 2015.
