Possible 2021 Mercedes drivers: #2 – Sergio Perez

Sergio Perez is considered one of the most competitive drivers in Formula 1, having won five consecutive teammate battles in the driver standings and being well on his way to a series-high sixth straight triumph.

He is easily the most competitive driver in the sport who has never had the opportunity to compete for a contending team. His name is often mentioned when a top-tier ride becomes available, but he has yet to end up in a competitive seat.

Despite his substantial financial backing, the 30-year-old Mexican won’t be back with Racing Point when they become Aston Martin next year, as he is set to be replaced by four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel.

Perez is the only driver aside from Lewis Hamilton who has scored points in each of his starts this season, although he did miss two races due to testing positive for COVID-19. If Hamilton were to leave Mercedes, Perez would be an ideal replacement for the team.

From Perez’s standpoint, if he ends up signing with Mercedes, you’re looking at potentially a driver who has never won a race in 188 starts, the second highest winless start total in Formula 1 history, becoming not only a race winner but a world champion in the matter of a single season.
