2017 Go Bowling 400 at Kansas Race Results – Truex Vindicated
By Alex Herbst
Martin Truex Jr. took his second win of the 2017 season on Saturday night in the Go Bowling 400 at Kansas, but there are lots of other big stories here too.
Night racing in the heartland is now the first night race of the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series schedule, with lots of action on Saturday night at Kansas Speedway. It was Martin Truex Jr. rolling into victory lane late at the 1.5-mile oval, but there were lots of other stories coming out of the race too.
Truex, picking up his second win of the 2017 season for Furniture Row Racing, earned some vindication after a screw caused a loose wheel last year, costing him the victory. He held off Ryan Blaney, who started on pole tonight and was one of the favorites late to take the win. Blaney has now led over 200 laps on the year, the most laps led by the Wood Brothers Racing #21 Ford in a season since Neil Bonnett drove for the team.
The race at Kansas Speedway saw the most cautions of all the races in 2017 with 15 in total. This also tied the record for the most yellow flags at the speedway in the heartland. Perhaps the scariest wreck in the track’s history and in recent memory in NASCAR occurred with just 67 laps to go, when Joey Logano clipped Danica Patrick, and Aric Almirola piled in. Patrick and Logano were checked and released from the infield care center, but Almirola needed to be lifted from his car. He is being monitored overnight at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
The three in this trio were not the only ones to find trouble among the pins in the Go Bowling 400. Early in the race, Chase Elliott collided with Michael McDowell on pit road, ruining both of their races. Meanwhile, Ryan Newman blew an engine near halfway, and Erik Jones spun out on three separate occasions during the event.
