2017 Monster Energy All-Star Race Results – Kyle Busch Finally Wins
By Alex Herbst
After twelve years of trying to win a NASCAR Cup Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, Kyle Busch finally did it in the All-Star Race on Saturday night.
Kyle Busch sparked off another argument over him racing in the Truck Series on Friday night after his latest win there. But outside of Trucks and Xfinity, the former Cup Series champ had yet to win at Charlotte Motor Speedway at the top level. That all changed on Saturday night, when he walked away with a cool one million dollars.
With a strong move on the start of the final 10-lap shootout for the Monster Energy All-Star Race, Kyle Busch raced to victory lane and a big payday on Saturday night. He held off segment three winner Jimmie Johnson and two-time segment winner Kyle Larson for the big victory. It was also the first win for Joe Gibbs Racing in 2017 in Cup.
While Busch moved on to celebrate with his family and team, it was Kyle Larson who was left wondering what could have been. Larson by far had the car to beat, outperforming the field even while on the lower-grip “prime” tires, compared to the green “alternate” Goodyears. However, a poor pit stop between segments three and four forced the #42 car to play catch-up, only charging back to 3rd.
The most drama on the night came from pit strategy calls by many drivers. Clint Bowyer and Ryan Blaney each took two tires before segment three of the race began, including a call for Bowyer that put him on two prime and two alternate tires. However, this plan did not work out for either driver, as neither transferred to the final segment.
Meanwhile, Brad Keselowski mistakenly put on alternate tires under yellow, then took them off, rendering them unable to be used. He would go on to finish 9th in the final stage.
