Upside: Between the IndyCar Series and its pre-merge predecessor Champ Car, Wilson has seven race wins, including one on the Texas oval. Racing for teams like Dale Coyne and Dreyer & Reinbold, Wilson has often scored results well above expectations.

Though winless in 2013, Wilson had his best points result then, highlighted by four podium finishes and a competitive fifth in the Indianapolis 500. Successes like that date far back for Wilson; he was the International Formula 3000 champion in 2001.

Questions: A dismal 2014 leaves some wondering if age (Wilson’s now 36) has caught up with the highly regarded driver.

Verdict: As more names are linked to Andretti Autosport, his chances there lessen, unless Andretti becomes a five-car team. Rumors of a seat with KV quieted, especially with better-backed candidates. A return to Dale Coyne seemed impossible months ago, but it may be the likeliest landing – Wilson’s always had a home there over two separate stints.
