Upside: Rossi, a GP2 winner whose last U. S. racing stint saw him destroy the Formula BMW field, has come as close to F1 as any American-born driver in the last seven years. He was all set to make his debut in Belgium this year before being bizarrely ousted for the driver he had replaced. For a 23-year-old, Rossi brings experience his contemporaries lack: four full seasons between GP2 and Formula Renault 3.5, Europe’s top ladder series.
Questions: Rossi’s last season in GP2 was filled with frustration, especially when his experience level in high-end feeder series warranted a championship bid. Moreover, Rossi still has the F1 dream, amplified now that Haas has an American-based team and an interest in him.
Verdict: Until recently, Rossi appeared to be a lock at Dale Coyne Racing. The anticipated confirmation never arrived, fueling speculation that Rossi might choose to pursue a 2016 F1 drive instead.
