Honorable Mention – Carl Edwards

Edwards falls into the category of the window still being open. In 2011 Edwards almost won a NASCAR title when he finished that season tied with Tony Stewart in the final standings. However, Stewart received the tie-breaker based on the number of wins that he had in the chase that season. The result was Stewart winning his third NASCAR title and Edwards having to settle for second place. Edwards also finished second in the standings in 2008 to Jimmie Johnson.

Edwards has won 23 races in his NASCAR career to go along with 190 top-10 finishes. Edwards left Roush Fenway Racing this past season to join Joe Gibbs Racing in 2015. The move to JGR was done in the hopes of finally brining home that elusive championship.
