The last-lap incident between Ricky Rudd and Dale Earnhardt cost Earnhardt the 1989 NASCAR Winston Cup. Not only did Earnhardt lose the race, he lost out on 36 points. In the season finale at Atlanta, Earnhardt obliterated the competition and won the race handily. Unfortunately he came up short in the championship standings losing by only 12 points to Rusty Wallace.
