Wrangler Jeans Indigo 500 (1987)

The 1987 Wrangler Jeans Indigo 500 in Richmond was one of the final races held on the tight and flat 1/2-mile configuration. In fact a year after this race, the track was converted into it’s current 3/4-mile state.

This race had just about everything a fan could want. The early stages of the event saw a wreck between Kyle Petty and Terry Labonte that blocked the entire front straightaway. It also saw one of the all-time underdogs in NASCAR, Jimmy Means run up front and lead laps en route to what may have been his best race in the Winston Cup series. The race also featured a controversial incident in the pits involving Dale Earnhardt and Darrell Waltrip as well as a classic and thrilling late-race duel between the same two adversaries.
