Kyle Busch suffers severe injuries at Daytona

While Kyle Busch’s injuries at Daytona were not suffered in a Sprint Cup series race, his resulting absence certainly created a void in the field for the 11 races that he subsequently missed. One (a very significant one) of Joe Gibbs’ star drivers was going to miss almost 1/3 of the season for something that didn’t have to happen.

Probably as significant as Kyle’s injuries was the stand-up manner in which both NASCAR and the Daytona International Speedway took responsibility for the accident and lack of a SAFER barrier in the area where Kyle suffered his impact. The result was for every track on the circuit to examine their own facilities and see where improvements could be made.  Many of these upgrades are already in place, and many will continue to appear in 2016.

Kudos to Joie Chitwood, President of Daytona International Speedway for his facility’s acceptance of their share of the responsibility to make NASCAR racing, at all levels, the safest that it can possibly be.
