No. 5 – Gordon vs. Bowyer (2012)

This is one of those moments that Gordon will admit he is not the most prod of.

This one isn’t so much about the physical impact of the wreck as much as it is about the impact it had on the 2012 title picture and fans perception of Jeff Gordon. Sure, many could make the argument that Bowyer had this coming after having numerous incidents with Gordon throughout the 2012 season, but this was just horrible sportsmanship on Jeff Gordon’s part.

The incident started when Bowyer made contact with Gordon’s tire on a restart, causing the tire to go flat and Gordon to slide up into the wall. Gordon was so livid about the incident that he decided to wait for Bowyer to come back around the track so he could then punt Bowyer and Joey Logano hard into the wall. Aric Almirola also spun out while trying to avoid the wreck. Unfortunately that wasn’t the end of it, as Gordon and Bowyers crew had an all-out fight in the infield, before finally being calmed down and separated by NASCAR officials.

Whether Gordon fans want to admit it or not, this is what soured a lot of fans opinions of Jeff Gordon. His actions were brash, thoughtless and ultimately a dangerous to himself, Clint Bowyer and his fellow competitors as well. Sure, fans probably won’t remember this as Gordon’s hardest impact, but they will definitely remember how much it impacted Gordon’s career afterwards.
