The NBC Commercial
Did anyone else feel slightly belittled when NBC released their new commercial for NASCAR last year? Sure, it was flashy, a little funny at times and had its funny lines to it, but I still couldn’t help but think that this wasn’t an accurate representation of the sport we all know and love. I also feel like the commercial was making fun of auto racing more than it was promoting the sport to a new audience of viewers.
Despite all this, there’s no denying that NBC caught people’s attention with this commercial, but was it really the positive attention that NASCAR needed? Think about it for a second. Isn’t NASCAR trying to become a more inclusive entity then it ever was before? Aren’t they supposed try to make the sport more appealing to a wider audience?
Instead of doing that, NBC decided to showcase NASCAR as a low-class redneck sport and that certainly wasn’t a good impression for new viewers. It’s almost as if NBC wasn’t taking the upcoming debut of NASCAR on their channel seriously and threw a stereotypical mess together at the last second.
If all that wasn’t bad enough, the commercial that was played by NBC had a little false advertising in it as well. If you look at the end of the commercial, you will see that it mentions NASCAR reporting to NBC Sports. While that in itself isn’t false advertising, the fact that they didn’t outright state the split up of the schedule between NBC and NBCSN is.
In the end, this was a poor idea on NBC’s part and really showed fans that NASCAR and NBC didn’t take fans best interests into consideration at all.
