NASCAR: Rusty Wallace’s Five Most Significant Wins
By Mike Hutton
Number 3: Richmond – September 1989
Significance: Last of 6 wins in ’89 season, won despite running out of fuel on last lap
Commentary: 1989 was probably destined to be Rusty’s season. He won 6 of the season’s 29 races, which is equivalent to a driver winning 6-7 races today. Nobody will probably ever eclipse the modern-day record of Jeff Gordon (13 wins in 1998 alone and 33 from ’96 through ’98.) Despite running out of fuel half-way down the backstretch on the last lap, Wallace was able to coast around and take the checkered flag ahead of Dale Earnhardt, Sr., Geoff Bodine and Ricky Rudd.
Next: #2 - Watkins Glen, August 1987
