NASCAR: Rusty Wallace’s Five Most Significant Wins
By Mike Hutton
Number 2: Watkins Glen – August 1987
Significance: First road-course win
Commentary: Highly-regarded as a short track specialist, Wallace also had a liking for road courses. He always approached them with the same passion and aggressiveness as he did a short track during an era where most drivers regarded them as a nuisance on the schedule and took a “let’s get this weekend over with” attitude. Wallace had a career six wins on road courses — two each at Riverside, Sonoma and Watkins Glen. His first of these victories came in August of 1987 at Watkins Glen where he finished a whopping (compared to today) 12 seconds ahead of Terry Labonte.
