Number 1: Darlington – September 5, 1999 – Pepsi Southern 500

Significance: 50th Southern 500, Sweeps Darlington in 1999

Commentary: Any driver wants to add the Southern 500 to his or her resume.  It is clearly one of the Cup series’ marquee events, and Darlington is an awful tough track to master for a win. However, that’s what Burton did not once, but twice in 1999. The race drew even more exposure because of the fact that it was the 50th running of the Labor Day classic.  A win is a win, and although this (and the other) Darlington win was rain-shortened in 1999, they still count. Late in the race, with more rain on the way, NASCAR announced a final 10-lap segment that would end the event. Many competitors made a last pit stop for tires, only to have the rain arrive sooner than expected, and thus the finishing order was somewhat not representative of where drivers had been running all day.
