The Huge One Happens At Daytona

“It’s the big one gang, it’s the big one.” Those were the words spoken by Fox sports analyst, Darrel Waltrip, after he watched the track disappear behind  a cloud of dust and debris during the 2001 Daytona 500.  The incident involved 18 cars and also featured Tony Stewart, who took one of the wildest rides in all of NASCAR history.

The ride, which involved Stewart being abruptly spun, hitting the wall, having his car turn on its side and finally tumble roll down the track while being nailed in various spots by other drivers was breathtaking and scary to say the least. In fact, the incident was so bad that Stewart even walked away with an arm injury after it was all said and done.

Not only was it one of the most bizarre wrecks in Daytona 500 history, it was also a testament to just how dangerous racing at Daytona International Speedway could be, especially with how aggressive drivers were being in the draft before the incident.
