Bonus Slide – 1963 Daytona 500

Nothing like this will ever happen in NASCAR again, which is why it was so memorable. Not for the fact that Tiny Lund, subbing for an injured Marvin Panch in the Wood Brothers No. 21, won the 1963 Daytona 500 as a sub. It’s because he won the race without changing a single tire.

Obviously, things were different back in the day, and the early 60s’ stock cars were closer to their stock counterparts than today’s cars. Same goes for the tires. Also noted that day was a lack of caution flags. Although the 1959 Daytona 500 was without a yellow, the 1963 event held only two cautions for 10 laps, and as a result, Lund beat Fred Lorenzen and Ned Jarrett to the line in just three hours and 17 minutes.
