Memorable moments.

Atlanta Motor Speedway has had some great finishes over the years, none probably stand out in fans minds as much as the finish 2001. Kevin Harvick, who had just taken over for Dale Earnhardt after his tragic death three weeks earlier, was in the lead with just three laps to go.  Unfortunately for Harvick, Jeff Gordon was hot on his tail and looking to grab his second win of the 2001 season.

Although Harvick only had three races in The Sprint cup Series, he was able to successfully battle the series veteran to the line in the closing seconds of the race and get the first win of his Sprint Cup career. The finish was one of the closest in the history of the sport and was very reminiscent of the finish one year earlier where Dale Earnhardt was able to beat Bobby Labonte to the line in a very similar fashion.

As for the closeness of both finishes, Dale Earnhardt was able to beat Bobby Labonte to the line by just 0.010 of a second. The finish lands tenth on the all-time closest finish list and was topped when Harvick beat Gordon to the finish line in 2001 by 0.006 of a second. The finish between Harvick and Gordon is seventh on the all-time closest finish list.
