Top 15 Greatest Finishes In NASCAR History
6. 2001 Pepsi 400: Dale Jr wins one for daddy
While last lap accidents and intense battles to the line are usually factors when considering an exciting finish, there are occasions when pure emotion t can trump both of those things and create a moment in NASCAR history like no other. That’s exactly what happened when Dale Earnhardt Jr battled through the field to win the first Pepsi 400 of his career and the first race since the death of his father just months earlier.
Another thing that makes this finish so exciting was the timing in which everything took place. Not only did Jr completely blow through the rest of the field in a matter of just two laps, but he was also able to get help from his teammate Michael Waltrip and hold off the pack for the win. The moment was made even sweeter when both Michael Waltrip and Dale Jr parked their cars on the infield grass and met atop Waltrip’s car for an emotional hug.
