IndyCar: Top 5 Races in St. Pete Grand Prix History
2013 – St. Petersburg Puts Hinchtown on the Map
The 2013 Grand Prix of St. Petersburg was a battle of attrition that ended with a very popular win for Canadian (and virtual mayor) James Hinchcliffe. It was the Mayor of Hinchtown’s first-ever win in the IndyCar Series and his first of three wins in the 2013 season. Hinchcliffe surged to the front after race-winning machine Will Power made contact with J.R. Hildebrand and dropped back into the middle of the field.
The 2013 race is also a memorable event because of the impact it likely had on the career of Swiss driver Simona de Silvestro. She fought her way into the top five and nearly had a podium finish. Her third-place battle with Marco Andretti came to an end when Andretti made the pass in the last corner on the last lap. Even though she finished fourth, de Silvestro likely picked up plenty of new fans because the race for third was one of the highlights of the event.
