The Underdog: Chase Elliott

Stats at Phoenix (Xfinity):

  • Wins: 0
  • Top-5’s: 1
  • Top-10’s: 4
  • Laps Led: 0

Chase Elliott will be racing in his first Cup Series race at Phoenix this weekend. With that in mind, it’s appropriate to check back on his Xfinity races for reference as to how he races at PIR. He placed in the top-10 in all four of his races there (9th, 5th, 7th, 7th) and looked pretty good doing it, even though he never won.

His Cup career has not gotten off the way he wanted it to. After winning the pole for the Daytona 500, he quickly exited the race due to a spin. He rebounded with an 8th place finish at Atlanta but quickly lost all his momentum at Las Vegas after being caught up in another wreck.

Elliott has looked very comfortable in his car though. Last weekend, he stayed in the top-10 for most of the race and even got up into the top-5 shortly before smashing into Matt Kenseth. He has been using his great cars to his advantage but just hasn’t had the luck that he’s needed.

That could all change this weekend as he heads to a track that he has put together solid races at. Elliott could shock everyone by pulling off his first win at Phoenix this weekend.
