2007 Daytona 500

Although this was not as close as the previous race, this edges that race out because it was in the “Great American Race.” Kevin Harvick earned the nickname, “The Closer,” from his move on the final lap of this race.

Mark Martin held control of the field in the final laps, and as the cars raced under the white flag, Martin led the top four cars who were single-file. On the back-straightaway,  Kyle Busch made a run to the inside of Martin, who successfully blocked in the No. 01 Army Chevrolet.

What was not lucky for Mark with this block was that it gave the No. 29 Chevrolet a run on the outside. Harvick got along side Martin in turn 3. As calamity broke out behind the front two, Harvick and Martin raced door-to-door as the checkered-flag waved. Harvick surged past Martin in the last hundred yards (notice a trend here?) towards the finish-line, earning his first and only win in the Daytona 500. Harvick led a mere four laps in this event, but he led the most important one.

Enjoy what was the closest finish in the history of the Great American Race until the 2016 running of the event, “quintessential ‘Closer'”:
