2016 Good Sam 500

Man Kevin Harvick has got a grip on Phoenix International Raceway. Remember when they ceremoniously named PIR “Jeff Gordon Raceway” in November in honor of it being Gordon’s penultimate race? They ought to just name it “Kevin Harvick Raceway.”

Although it was Harvick’s eighth win at Phoenix, it was not an easy one this time around. Unlike the other races on this list, he lead the most laps, but a late race restart nearly cost him. Kasey Kahne blew a tire with six laps remaining, leading to the second edition of NASCAR’s new “Overtime.”

Harvick, Dale Jr., and Austin Dillon did not pit while the rest of the lead lap cars did. Harvick cleared the field off of turn 2 on the penultimate lap, but Carl Edwards reeled him in on the final lap. Edwards got under Harvick coming off of turn 4, and the top 2 slammed into each other twice coming to the line, with Harvick edging Carl by 0.010 seconds the same margin of victory as the Daytona 500.

This finish was very similar to the Craven/Busch duel at Darlington in 2003, with cars slamming and drivers showing an ultimate test of skills. Have a look at Sunday’s fantastic finish resulting in another dramatic victory for “The Closer”:
