NASCAR: Winners And Losers From Phoenix
By Cole Mentzel
Loser: Richard Childress Racing
It was not a great day for two-thirds of RCR as Ryan Newman and Paul Menard made contact with the wall during the first 106 laps of the race.
For Ryan Newman, trouble came in the form of a melted tire bead. On Lap 52, Newman lost control of his car before sliding into the corner, bringing out the caution. His 39th-place finish kept him from a chance at capturing his first top-10 finish of the season after a solid running at Las Vegas.
For Paul Menard, a melted bead also led to the end of his day, as he made contact with the wall on Lap 105. He finished just one spot ahead of Newman, in 38th, after finishing in the top-20 for the first three races of the season.
Despite the bad luck with the No. 31 and No. 27 teams, it wasn’t all bad for RCR as Austin Dillon finished in 9th place, leading to his third top-10 of the season.
However, despite a bright spot, the majority of the team had some early issues that led to their downfall at PIR.
