IndyCar: Top Five Races at Phoenix International Raceway
Wire to Wire
Bobby Rahal may not be the first name on the list of IndyCar greats, but he was a fierce competitor who could drive the wheels off of a car. His performance at Phoenix in 1992 is one of the best indicators of just how dominant “The ‘Stache” could be in a race car.
Rahal was using an older Chevrolet power plant in his Lola race car, but he was able to stretch it to its limits in the desert. He started the race in the second position alongside pole-sitter Michael Andretti who was in a Lola powered by Ford-Cosworth. The Bow Tie came out on top on the first lap when Rahal took the lead. He never looked back.
Rahal went wire to wire and lead every lap of the 200-lap Valvoline 200. It would prove to be the first of four wins for Rahal. He would go on to win his third CART championship.
