NASCAR: Winners And Losers From Auto Club
By Cole Mentzel
Winner: SAFER Barriers
SAFER barriers are some of the finest inventions in auto racing today as they have limited the amount of devastating impacts at high speeds. The SAFER barriers at Auto Club Speedway came up big for a couple of drivers involved in accidents.
First, Kyle Larson blew a tire, causing him to lose control and impact a barrier on the backstretch. Fortunately, Larson was okay after the crash, which lifted the entire car off of the ground. Shortly after impact, he got on his radio and stated that he was “okay” but that the wreck “really hurt.” No surprises there.
Larson wasn’t the only one who hit the wall hard. Danica Patrick flew into the barrier after contact with Kasey Kahne. Her impact was just as dangerous as Larson’s and it led to her climbing out of the car fast after a fire was spotted underneath. She was also okay after the wreck and had a few things to say about Kahne, however, he was quick to take the blame on Twitter after the race was over.
The SAFER barriers were in full force on Sunday and were able to keep all of the drivers safe after some very scary impacts. Hopefully, we’ll continue to see them appear in new places around other NASCAR venues.
