Number 5: 1973 “Medal of Honor” Firecracker 400 From Daytona
Significance: First Win At 400-Mile distance, 11 of 18 Races won this season
Commentary: In a season where Pearson competed in only 18 races, he won 11 of them in 1973. This was his second of three wins in a row during the year, and his first win in the summer Daytona race at 400 miles. (Pearson had previously won the Firecracker 250 in 1961.) Pearson led a race-high 51 laps en route to the win, and averaged 158.468 miles per hour. An Independence Day crowd of approximately 60,000 witnessed the victory.
