Number 3: 1991 Champion Spark Plug 400 From Michigan

Significance:  First Cup Win, Closest finish in MIS history

Commentary:  There were several “firsts” with Dale’s win at Michigan in June of 1991.  It was Dale’s first-ever Cup series win.  It was the first (and only time to date) that a Cup driver has recorded his first career win at Michigan, it was the closest finish in MIS history and it was Dale’s only win for the legendary Wood Brothers Racing team. Dale would sign with Joe Gibbs Racing the following year, perhaps as a result of talent displayed at this race.  Crowd-favorite Davey Allison finished second to Jarrett by about 10 inches as the two came off turn four side-by-side and even bumped on the way to the checkered flag.  This race also was a battle among manufacturers, as there were five different ones represented in the starting field – a fact not uncommon in Michigan as many manufacturer headquarters are less than an hour away from the track.
