The Underdog: Jamie McMurray

Stats at Martinsville:

  • Wins: 0
  • Top-5’s: 2
  • Top-10’s: 14
  • Laps Led: 201

Jamie McMurray hasn’t won a race since 2013 when he made it to Victory Lane at Talladega. That could change this weekend. Even though McMurray, has struggled this season, along with teammate Kyle Larson, he has a unique opportunity to pick up his eighth career Cup Series win.

Martinsville happens to be one of his best tracks, despite having no wins there. His average finish of 16.38 is his fifth best out of all tracks. He’s had more top-10’s there (14) than at any other track plus he’s led 201 laps there, which is his third-highest total at a venue.

To go along with his top-10 finishes at Martinsville, let’s not forget that it was McMurray that attempted to pull off a pass and eventually settled for second behind Jeff Gordon in last year’s Chase race.

The bottom line is that, even though he hasn’t had much success lately, Jamie McMurray is a great at racing around the paperclip. For that reason, he could pull off an upset on Sunday.
