NASCAR: Winners And Losers From Martinsville
By Cole Mentzel
Winner: Leading Laps
Kyle Busch came to Martinsville with a determined mindset as he was looking to pick up his first win at the track.
After taking care of that on Saturday in the Camping World Truck Series race, his next task was to complete the sweep of the weekend with a win in the Cup Series race.
He did just that but added a little something extra to the equation: dominating by staying out front for most of the race. Busch led 352 laps in the race. That’s the most out of any active driver as Jimmie Johnson comes in close at second with 339 in 2008 and 346 in 2013.
Busch credited his pit crew for the ability to stay out front (via usatoday.com):
"“That was huge, the race off pit road. My guys were flawless today. We made a few adjustments to the car throughout the day, and they kept getting me out and not even losing a spot on pit road. That was the key to the race, being able to restart on the bottom like that.”"
The fact that Busch was able to raise the bar, in terms of dominating a Martinsville race like he did, is remarkable considering that he had never won there before this weekend. It’s just another incredible feat he has accomplished since his run began last season.
