NASCAR: Winners And Losers From Richmond
By Cole Mentzel
Winner: Chase Elliott’s “Sexy” Restart Move
All eyes were on Tony Stewart at Richmond as he made his return from a back injury. It was his first race of the season after drivers like Brian Vickers and Ty Dillon had subbed in for him in the first eight races.
It was obvious that Stewart was having fun and enjoying his time out on the track. His first real action of the day involved the No. 24 car, which was being driven by Jeff Gordon last time Stewart was on the track.
Chase Elliott’s 23rd-place starting position gave him some early trouble, as he struggled in the middle of the field before finally getting back on the lead lap and finishing in 12th place.
However, by being in the middle, he got the opportunity to race with Stewart and showed a pretty nice move on a restart, where he threaded the needle, flying between Stewart and the wall. It was just the beginning of the success Elliott had running up high.
Afterwards, Tony Stewart described the move in his own words: “What the 24 did on that restart was sexy. That was pretty cool.”
