Ridiculous rules

NASCAR has a way of embarrassing itself from time to time and its constantly changing rules are a perfect example of that. Not only did NASCAR institute a last-minute restart line and one GWC attempt rule during last year’s Chase, they continued their flurry of ridiculous rules by putting what is essentially a shot clock in the Camping World Truck Series.

With that being said, what other mainstream sport does something like this? If NASCAR really wanted to transition itself into more of a mainstream sport, something they are desperately failing at so far, they would wait until the offseason to make changes to how the playoffs will be run or how a race will be run in general.

While it is understandable that NASCAR officials took needed safety measures during the Talladega Superspeedway Chase race after watching Austin Dillon take a ride into the catch fence earlier in the year at Daytona, but they went back on the rule in the closing moments of the race and looked silly for doing so.

What made the moment even worse was the fact that it looked like NASCAR was just altering the rule in order to secure Dale Earnhardt Jr. a spot in the next round of the Chase (obviously they weren’t but still, it’s a bad look). Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Joey Logano were battling for the lead on the final restart of the 2015 Talladega Chase race, when another caution came out only seconds later.

While many thought that this would count as the one attempt at a G-W-C, NASCAR argued that since it wasn’t ruled as an official restart, the drivers would be lined back up and the attempt would be tried again. Unfortunately for Earnhardt and his fans, Harvick had an engine problem during the final restart and took out half the field on;y seconds after the second attempt was official.

This left NASCAR fans with a ton of questions and anger towards officials and also showed just how bad of a state the sport seems to be in when it comes to constantly changing rules and regulations.
